1) Tell us about yourself and what you do
Hi, I’m Hanis and I do cartoon illustrations as a hobby. I like video games, internet, doodling, etc.
2) What do you intend for people to see or feel when they view your work?
Maybe feel a bit of joy, or be inspired by it. Or thinks that it’s good enough that they’d pin it on Pinterest.
3) Which artists do you admire and why?
There’s just so much. From the top of my head, the more known ones are Kim Jung Gi, Jake Parker, Mike Mignola etc etc. Then there’s Arnold Tsang, KangGoon, Kim il Kwang, Asaf Hanuka etc etc. The list evolves/changes over time. This doesn’t include random artists that I found online but can’t remember. In terms of why, they just make pretty illustrations. But sometimes it’s something specific like the way they ink, color, sketch, draw eyes/hands, etc etc.
4) First piece of artwork?
Honestly, I don’t remember. I recall just doodling random things and never finishing them as a kid (and still do, a lot). And since I mostly draw characters, my finished artwork typically consists of characters doing poses with a flat/no background. But I do occasionally draw backgrounds, or at least try to get better at them instead of procrastinating.
5) What is the one medium/tool you can’t live without?
Since I’m mainly a digital artist, I can’t live without my drawing tablet. My main software is Photoshop but if that’s gone maybe I can adapt to using other applications.
6) How would you define success as an artist?
I really want to make a comic/graphic novel. If I could just get one or two notable works out there, then I’m probably good. Or getting called out by an artist that I look up to and have them genuinely like what I made.
